So far so good
Having never had an mp3 player before, I really like this one so far. It is a little heavy and the jury is still out on the battery life. I have been able to download lots of music so far without making a dent in hard drive space. I have also loaded a movie and am really impressed with picture quality. Upgrades have gone very smoothly and it connects to wifi pretty easily. Web browsing a little slow but not terrible. All in all very happy with purchase.
Love/Hate relationship
Where do I begin? I really wanted to love the Archos 5. I got it for a great price, and I thought I made a sound investment. For the first two days I had to reset it like three times, but after that it worked flawlessly. Another thing, the battery didn't last too long after a full charge because I constantly surfed the web while I was in class etc. Here's my problem. I used it earlier today while I drove, and I drove to class and it worked fine. I turned it off, and I went about my business. Around 5 o' clock I decided to turn it on because I was leaving. I noticed that it made this loud clicking noise. On top of that, it wouldn't boot up. I tried every method to turn it on, and nothing seemed to work. I was highly upset because I had it for a little over a week. Anyways I'm returning it and I'll just stick to my three year creative zen vision:m. I'm lucky that I didn't sell it yet.
Pros: Great screen, great use of touch technology, a lot of space, loved the interface, Wi-fi, great browser, and great sound.
Cons: Easy to clutter with fingerprints, battery isn't the best, takes a while to boot up, and it freezes quite often.
In conclusion, if the Archos 5 didn't have all of these problems I would highly recommend it. Maybe I had a faulty unit but I'm not going to invest in another one.

This is the best that portable media has to offer. The storage is massive. You can store everything you want and still have alot of free space. Plus at the price its practically a steal. The screen is the clearest out there. I stored pics taken from my phone and couldn't believe how clear they were. They never look so clear on my phone or computer. It was like the archos improved them.
Plus the screen is so big its almost like having a portable big screen on my trips.
The only problems would be that its notorious for collecting finger prints. Also the built in speaker doesn't sound very good but who can complain when i-pods don't even have built in speakers. I don't even understand why people still use i-pods when this out classes it by so much. Maybe because the archos 250G is very bulky but if that is the case then maybe the 60G might be for them.

Very nice product, a little bit heavy however the video quality is great and the touchscreen is quite responsive, very happy with it
Great PMP for Apple alternative
I have had the 120 GB Archos 5 for 6 months. We bought it specifically for a family trip so the kids (7 and 2) could watch videos on the plane and in the car. I also have a PSP 2000 with a 12GB SD setup (RAID 8+4) and that also gets used as a PMP. My soon to be brother-in-law has had the Archos 605 for over a year and he really enjoyed it, although it sometimes was a little buggy. I was really looking at the Creative Zen but was won over by the memory to price ratio and functions of the Archos. I never considered Apple and refuse to go with the iTunes proprietary setup. I think Apple has the best UI designers in the industry and put out phenomenal products, but I just won't get sucked into the cult. One of the big selling points for the Archos is it does not require you to synch, you just dump the files on and use it. I wish both Apple and Microsoft would realize that is an optional feature that would bring in a lot more business.
Overall, we have been REALLY happy with the Archos 5. I haven't had any of the issues that others have had with random reboots, wifi connectivity, or the software not performing. I am guessing that since I updated the firmware the first day I had it that I never saw the Beta bugs. The Opera browser is so-so and I have run into some Flash compatibility issues, although the Firmware updates seem to have fixed some of those. I have a secured WiFi network and it was super easy to connect. Frankly, I don't use this to surf the net - I want my 22" monitor for that, although the Archos works in a pinch. However, I will generally use my smartphone with Skyfire before using the Archos with Opera....
It feels so much more solid than the competition and it really is still pretty portable. We use a compact camera case to carry it so we have the charging plugs for wall and car with us where ever we go (exchangeable USB heads, slow but usable).
I am now getting around to installing a hookup in our Acura MDX so we can use it at the MP3 player for the stereo system. I can't believe that they failed to put a aux phono jack in a car like that, but they did.... The touch screen seems perfectly suited to this application and I am looking forward to using it. We used it in a rental car (with an aux jack) this summer and it was great - nice crisp, clear music (~80 GB worth) and easy to find the album/song you are looking for.
We also just got the DVR cradle. It is the Gen 7 so I hope they have addressed some of the issues that the Gen 6 had. I should be hooking it up in the next couple of weeks. I know there have been issues with the subscription service and while I really hope it works, I mostly got the cradle so I could watch from the Archos to the TV. Update on the DVR cradle: I hooked it up and in no time was watching and recording on my TV. I have not gotten the TV Scheduler to work yet as there are issues with the Archos site, but I will continue to work on this. Also, I easily linked up my Network shared files and streamed all of my server media via the Archos to my entertainment system. We watch a movie stored on my computer downstairs streaming via WiFi to the Archos hooked to my TV and surround sound setup. Pretty sweet! The included remote is not very responsive, but I am planning on programming the functions to my Logitech anyway....
We use this primarily to watch videos we have moved there from a PC and it excels at that. It is quick and easy to load, the screen is spectacular, and the controls are pretty easy to use. The codec support is really good out of the box, but you do have to purchase certain ones. Frankly, I have not run into anything I cannot play. Much better than some of the competition, though.
Ultimately, I am really glad I bought this and so far have not found a similar product I would have rather purchased as a PMP.
