My top 5 movies (and reasons why) for every year of the 21st century.(I might add pictures later, if I'm feeling less lazy. THIS POST IS LONG ENOUGH AS IT IS, K.)
2000
- American Psycho
- The blood and gore in this movie really got to me. Also, Christian Bale, naked, running around with a chainsaw. If that doesn't make a movie on my list, I don't know what will.
- Bring It On
- OH THE CAMPINESS OF THIS MOVIE. I'm such a sucker for the really bad comedies like this one. Only this one had an awesome soundtrack, cheerleaders, and um other awesome things? I just really like bad campy movies. They're kinda my crack.
- Digimon: The Movie
- YA'LL KNOW YOU LOVED THIS MOVIE. Actually, I'm probably the only one who loved this movie. I was obsessed with Digimon when I was a kid. (And I still can sing the theme song!) Fox Kids was my crack every weekday afternoon, and Saturday morning. And then this movie came out and I wanted to watch it over and over, again and again. I have it on VHS, and sometimes Nick comes over to watch it. SHUT UP, WE'RE AWESOME.
- Remember the Titans
- Over the years, I've found that, while I don't really like football, I love watching football movies. Remember the Titans started the love. One of the few movies I've almost cried during. It's such a roller coaster of emotions, from anger to happiness, nad has a fantastic message about racism and how we're all equal. Plus, it's got pretty much the most awesome soundtrack of all time.
- Requiem for a Dream
- THIS MOVIE HAS OFFICIALLY SCARRED ME FOR LIFE, YOU GUYS. The shot of his infected arm still almost makes me throw up. I love this movie though. It's officially put me off drugs for the duration of my entire life. I love how twisted it is, and how you see what the characters see while they're high. I think we should show this to every health class in the world, because then NO ONE WOULD DO DRUGS. EVER.
- A Knight's Tale
- Yes, I will take a smoking hot Heath Ledger, naked Paul Bettany, ALAN MF TUDYK, and Shannyn Sossamon in a movie, plz. This movie is so absolutely ridiculous in plot and character delevopment, but I love every stupid second of it. It's got gorgeous props and costumes, and I love how much color is infused with every scene. And, it starts out with QUEEN. 'WE WILL ROCK YOU', YESPLZ.
- Black Hawk Down
- Another one of the very few movies I've almost cried during. I started out watching this for Orlando Bloom, but quickly fell in love with all the characters. I love seeing their struggles in Somalia, and how much trouble they end up getting into. I love how gritty and raw everything feels while you're watching this movie. I even love how it leaves you with a part of your soul feeling cold and empty at the hatred shown in this movie.
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
- This definitely isn't my favorite HP movie, but it's the one that started it all, and for that I'm forever grateful. It wsa ridiculous how much the characters looked similar to the ones in my head, and I loved how I managed to get all of the names and spells sounded out correctly whenever I was reading the book. Hogwarts felt like I could call it home after seeing this.
- Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
- OH MAN YOU GUYS, I LOVE THESE MOVIES TOO MUCH. Even though I've seen them all at least 10 times (mostly going through the Extended Editions too, lolz), I still love watching (just about) every second. I think this is the perfect way to start of the most epic trilogy of all time. All of the characters just feel so real. And don't even get me started on the cinematography/costumes/dialogue/score. So pretty and yet so real looking.
- Ocean's Eleven
- Con movies (and tv shows! Thanks, Leverage!) are some of my favorites. I loooooooove seeing the big reveal of how they really pulled off the crime. One of my favorite things was that this takes place in Vegas (which I've been going to ever since I was like, 2), so I was able to recognize a bunch of the places they showed in the movie. Plus, the dialogue is hilarious.
- Bend It Like Beckham
- I think I like this movie mostly because it puts me into a completely different world. I don't really know British culture, let alone Punjabi, so it makes me drift off into some distant world. It's a really funny movie, and pretty campy, without going overboard. Plus, I now believe every movie should have Jonathan Rhys-Meyers with an Irish accent. IT SHOULD BE A LAW, MKAY?
- The Bourne Identity
- Jason Bourne is pretty much my hero. He kicks so much ass (in Identity, he kills a guy with a fucking MAGAZINE. THAT IS RIDCULOUS.), and still has so many issues. This isn't my favorite of the serise because of the intensely confusing plot lines, but I still love it anyways. Plus, shit blows up. That's always a plus.
- Catch Me If You Can
- Another con movie, yay! This time it's a lot more srs bzns though. All of the different faces and characters Leo DiCaprio plays in this movie are awesome. They're all different in their own ways, but he still manages to keep the characteristics of the original Frank Abginale Jr. I'm sorry Aaron Tveit, but his Frank > your Frank. (Although your abs < his abs.)
- Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
- Yes, all of the LotR movies are on my list. I just love watching all of them though! (AND THIS IS MY LIST, BITCHES.) Two Towers is probably my least favorite of all three, but that's only because I somewhat dislike all of the Frodo/Sam/Gollum/Smeagol scenes. (They kinda bore me. =/) But dude, battle of Helms Deep I could watch over and over. Also, KU IS A HOTASS. End of story.
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding
- See? Campy is my second favorite genre of movie (behind epic war things lolz.) and this is campy at it's best. I love the really random characters and LULZ RANDOM JOEY FATONE FTW. There are certain ways where the Mom reminds me of my Mom, and the Dad reminds me of my own Dad, and it's fun to watch parodies of them.
- Holes
- This book was like, my favorite thing in the 3rd/4th grade, and when I heard they were making a movie, I was terrified. But in the end, it really lived up to the original, without being completely boring considering THEY'RE DIGGING HOLE FOR HALF THE BOOK/MOVIE. The crazy charactersand the flashbacks are my favorite.
- The Italian Job
- When we were in Venice, my Dad and I watched this movie (because we were adjusting to the time change and couldn't sleep at like, 3 in the morning) and the next day, we spent a good half the day pointing out places from the movie that we were currently seeing. This movie is fantastic though. Great action, family drama, and fantastic comedy. Plus, it's got this amazing cast from the hilarious Seth Green to the sexy Jason Statham and Mark Whalberg.
- Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
- OH HAI, I'M RETURN OF THE KING AND I'M IN UR ACADEMY AWARDS, STEALIN UR OSCARS. One of my most vivid memories of seeing a movie was seeing this with Jared, and we were whispering to each other the entire time, laughing at inside jokes I don't remember. But I was truly happy, and that doesn't happen too often. RotK is my favorite LotR movie, simply because OMG SO MUCH PRETTY. If you can make a battlefield, a burning city, and climbing up a mountain THAT GORGEOUS, you do deserve 11 Oscars. I also listened to "Into the West" on repeat when I got this soundtrack. SHUT UP IT'S A RLY GOOD SONG.
- Ned Kelly
- Originally, I watched this movie because I was in my Orlando Bloom phase, and Heath Ledger was just an awesome bonus. Then I read up on the story of Ned Kelly and kinda fell in love. Things were so blown out of proportion in those days, and a few men just decided they weren't going to stand for it. So they began doing the Robin Hood thing of robbing banks and giving to the poor (aka their families). One day, one of their friends betrayed them, and there was a gigantic shootout and everyone died. It is said that it took 23 bullets to kill Ned Kelly though, and I think that's pretty damn awesome. Plus, HEATH LEDGER AND ORLANDO BLOOM.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
- WHERE THE ORLANDO OBSESSION BEGAN OMG. I first saw this during a showing on the Disney Cruise that my parents took me on during the winter of 2003 and quickly fell in love with it. I've always been kinda a fan of the original ride, but it gets pretty boring when you live in Southern California and go on it 215,000 times before the age of 5. Johnny Depp was absolutely brilliant, and a breath of fresh air than what Capt. Jack could have been. I've probably seen this movie more than 100 times (no seriously. I watch it for like, a month straight after school after we got the DVD.) and know every line by heart, AND I STILL WATCH IT. Just less often because you can only take so much of a good thing.
- The Bourne Supremacy
- Karl Urban is the hottest assassin in the history of like, everything. Ever. I think this is my favorite Bourne because of him, and I really liked the story in this one. I liked how there seemed to be no downtime in between action scenes, because HAY THAT WOULD KINDA BE REAL LIFE. Also, Bourne's chick died, and I laughed, ngl.
- Friday Night Lights
- A completely underrated movie. I originally read the book, fell in love, then decided to watch the movie (no, I have yet to see the show. I can't get over the fact that it's called FNL, but doesn't have Boobie Miles. And when did the town turn into Dillion? IDEK.). We went for my birthday this year, and the next day my friend Caly called me up to ask if I wanted to see it again, and I instantly said yes. I think the best thing is that it feels so real. You know how it felt when your school team lost that HUGE game to your rivals or whatever, and you know that devestation. The stories about the players always fascinated me too. Their whole existance is based on football, so where do they go from there after they're out of high school? Bonus: Explosions in the Sky is on the soundtrack in one of the most beautiful ending montages I've ever seen.
- The Notebook
- SO CHEESY. SO GOOD. This movie has the total magical ability to put you down, and then bring you bakc up again. The first time I saw this, I was with my mom, Nick, and Nick's Mom, Chris. By the end, Nick, Mom and Chris were all crying and I was sitting there awkwardly. LULZ. Still never cried during a movie, but this one has had me close a couple of times. As much as I love Noah Calhoun, my heart feels for Lon, because HE DID NOTHING WRONG IN THIS SITUATION. Poor James Marsden, I will comfort you.
- Super Size Me
- Everytime I see this movie, I stop eating McDonald's for like a month. It's disturbing, disgusting, and so informative in a fun way. It goes deeper than just the experiment, and you really get to know the fast food industry in just a 2 hr movie. Plus, Morgan Spurlock is pretty funny.
- Troy
- Have I mentioned the Orlando Bloom phase yet? BECAUSE THIS WAS THE MOTHERFUCKING HEIGHT OF THE OB LOVE. Holy shit, I watched every trailer, every interview, every clip I could get my hands on for this movie. Somewhere, I still have a videotape filled with all of those interviews, including Brad Pitt and Eric Bana on Oprah, and Eric Bana (being hilariously adorable) on Leno. It was the first rated R film I ever saw, and I saw it the first day it came out in theaters. It's not the best movie in the world, but I still love watching it for the epicness and hot guys SCREW IT, AND THE HOT GUYS.
- (Special Note): Alexander
- Ok yes, I realize this movie is kinda awful. But Alexander was the movie that introduced me into slash fanfic, and uh, yeah. That love only grew like, 20,000x bigger. Bad movie, good outcome for Jessica. (Also, Jared Leto's eyes made me melt. ngl.)
- The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
- I HATED these books when I was a kid. I couldn't get through any of them. The Magician's Nephew threw my brain through a loop, and TLtWatW made me want to fall asleep. But this movie was awesome. I love tha world that you're thrown into when they enter the wardrobe. And for being a Disney movie, that battle scene was pretty good. And I want Aslan as my personal pet kitty.
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
- Favorite book, and currently favorite movie. While I'm still upset at the lack of the Quidditch World Cup, I thought this movie did an awesome job at taking 450 pgs and putting it into a 2.5 hr movie, with a lot of the main details in tact. The Triwizard Tournament has always fascinated me, and it was interesting to see it all play out during the movie as opposed to just in my mind.
- Rent
- I still get pissed when people try to sing 'Seasons of Love' but get the wrong number of minutes in a year. Anyways, this was the movie that got me into musical theater. I've always loved musicals, but after watching Rent, I fell in love with the Broadway scene. In other news, Jesse L. Martin BROKE MY SOUL in 'I'll Cover You (Reprise)'. s;lakjfgha;fkjghsdfkjlg
- Serenity
- I didn't get into the world of Firefly until after the show was waaaaaaay over, but I'm so glad that I did. These characters and this world feel so real, so tangible. And I also adore anything Joss Whedon touches, so, uh, yeah. Plus, sometimes I understand what they're saying in Chinese, which makes me feel really accomplished about myself. Wash was my favorite character though, and I'm totally not forgiving Joss for killing him off.
- Sin City
- One of the goriest films of the year was also one of my favorites of the year. Sin City is a fucking GORGEOUS movie. It's mainly in black and white, but with splashes of color here and there (mostly for blood lolz.) Deadly Little Miho is one of the few women in the world I'm afraid of. Also, Jessica Alba as a stripper and Clive Owen being a badass. In black and white. HELL YES.
- Casino Royale
- I never really got everybody's paranoia about Daniel Craig being a blond Bond. I was like, screw the hair, he just needs to be kickass. And Craig truly is KICKASS. He's got this cool and calm persona, even in the heat of battle, which is just sexy. Plus, he plays poker. I've always had a weird love of watching poker tournaments when they're on tv, and seeing it in a movie (with that level of intensity, holy shit) was awesome.
- Children of Men
- HOW SO AWESOME, CLIVE OWEN. I'm in love with all the scenes with one EPICALLY long take. Especially close to the end, when they're getting that girl out of the building, and there's essentially a war going on in the background? AMAZING. Beautiful, gritty cinematography too.
- The Devil Wears Prada
- I love love love love love looking at costumes in movies. If a costume looks fake, and really doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the cast, I probably won't end up liking the movie. All of the costumes in this movie are GORGEOUS, and if I had money and Anne Hathaway's body, I'd probably try to go out and get those bad boys. I've still yet to read the book, but I've heard that the movie somewhat is better in certain ways. Probably because it has Meryl Streep. Meryl Streep > you.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
- Probably my lease favorite out of the series, but I still love it all the same. I mostly love the dynamic between Bootstrap Bill and Will because, really, we don't have too many connections to family in those movies. Oh, and Jack Davenport as the scruffy, emotionally broken Norrington? FUCK YES PLZ.
- X-Men
- I will always maintain that the original X-Men was the best. Seriously, these movies are kickass. I was in love with the X-Men tv show and comics when I was a kid (Gambit was always my favorite.) and was happy to carry that love into my teenage years. Got pretty bored with the love triangle between Jean/Scott/Logan, but I've always kinda disliked that story. Anyways, big explosions and CGI make up for just about everything in my world.
- 300
- The epic movie to end all epic movies. I didn't really have an interest in this film until my friend Jesse came back from seeing it and wouldn't stop talking about the epic for like, a week. Loved every crazy minute of this movie. I'm a huge fan of the blood, guts, and gore, and obviously I'm a sucker for huge CGI effects. Put them together (along with Gerard Butler's abs), and you get 300!
- Across the Universe
- BEEEEEEEEEEATLES. My favorite band of all time incorporated into a kickass movie. I don't really think of this as a musical. It's just a moive in which the characters sing. It doesn't really feel like they're bursting out into song just to get into choreographed dance, but it's like it's just a part of their lives. I adore all of the little references to other Beatles songs that they didn't sing in the movie ("At least you didn't kill your grandmother with a hammer!") Watching 'For the Benefit of Mr. Kite' always makes me feel like I'm on an insane acid trip. (BTW, I really want to try that sometime lulz)
- Hairspray
- CAMP AT ITS BEST, YO. I pretty much wanted to die when I heard ZEfron was going to be Link, and John Travolta was going to be Edna. I'm still not sure about the Travolta part, but ZEfron won me over completely. This show is just fluffy and happy and filled with bunnies to its core, and I love all of the happy dance routines and PENNY/SEAWEED. Also, I feel like Mary will kill me if I don't mention her bb, James Marsden, aka CORNY MFING COLLINS, in here somewhere. So uh, CORNY COLLINS FTW.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
- They gave me Pirates of the Caribbean, and then added on more Geoffrey Rush, AND KEITH RICHARDS. WTF IS THAT YOU GUYS. I mainly loved this movie because they ramped up the EPIC. Also, super crazy Capt. Jack in Davy Jones' Locker is amazing. Oh Johnny Depp, you already won my heart, and then you had chemistry with a GOAT. I also love how ridiculous this movie gets. It just gets to the point where I don't know what's going on, who is on whose side, AND I DON'T CARE. IT'S STILL EPIC AND AWESOME.
- Sweeney Todd
- The best part about this movie, is that if you come up to my Dad and pretend to slice his throat HE STILL FREAKS OUT. I've been in love with this musical since I heard NPH's version of "Not While I'm Around", which was like, forever ago. Of the musical theater gods (Sondheim, Webber, Larson, Mel Brooks, JRB, etc.) I think Sondheim is my favorite. The dude did Company (RAUUULLLL) and Sweeney and a bunch of other amazing shit. (Mostly I'm here for Raul though. I'm still bitter DHP got the Tony.) ANYWAYS, about the movie. Still love the amount of crazy gore, and how dark and gritty the sets and cinematatography are. Plus, Alan Rickman sings. INSTANT WIN.
- 21
- For really pathetic reasons, I simply love this movie for the amazing amount of Jim Sturgess. Damn that boy is hot. Anyways, Vegas movies alays make me happy, and I love the eclectic characters who are also on the team. I'm a big fan of supporting characters (see:Glee. I love all the minorities, not the main characters.) and this has a really diverse cast with different motives, which we see all throughout the movie. Also, Jim Sturgess. End of story.
- The Dark Knight
- I maintain that if you don't like this movie at least a little bit, you don't have a soul. Heath Ledger deserved that posthumurous Oscar, imo. He pulled this psychopathic mass murderer out of nowhere, when the interpretations in the past have been just simply crazy, or with a motive. His was a different level of crazy, a level that you actally wanted to know what happened in that twisted mind of his to make the Joker so screwed up. Also, it has Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart being hotasses. And lots of explosions. I've saw this movie 3 times in theaters, and I still jump at the part when the fake Batman is hanging from the mayor's office. I'm lame like that.
- High School Musical 3: Senior Year
- K, I lied. THIS is the campiest movie like, ever. I remember Bailey and I went to see this in the theater and the entire time we were like, "ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG." And then we came back to my house and listened to the soundtrack. YES, WE'RE REALLY 12 YRS OLD AT HEART. Anyways, my favorite part of this movie (other than "Scream" because INFINITE WIN, ZEFRON. INFINITE WIN.) would have to be the epic adorable of Kelsey/Ryan. Musical theater presumably gay guy + pianist YESPLZ. Watching this movie just makes me happy. And some days, you just need the happy.
- Wall-E
- What makes me happier than HSM3? WALL-E. Holy shit, this is the most freakishly adorable movie I've ever seen in my entire life. You definietly have to be willing to pay attention, since there's little dialogue, but STILL. If you actually haven't seen this movie, you need to. Your heart just feels like it's floating on a cloud by the end. HE CLIMBS ON A FUCKING ROCKET FOR EVE, OK GUYS? YOU CAN'T DENY THAT LOVE.
- The Wrestler
- One of the best movies of last year. It probably helps a bit that I love wrestling, but you still can't deny how AMAZING Mickey Rourke was in it. That guy has had an amazing comeback to Hollywood (starting with Sin City! <3). Anyways, this movie really has a lot of emotion filled within it. Knowing what has happened to some of the broken down wrestlers (who used to be the superstars of the business) made thigns a lot more real feeling. Also, the hardcore action was intense. And the meat slicing scene had me biting into my sweatshirt (a nervous habit).
- 17 Again
- ZEfron has a shitload of movies on this list. Anyways, I was pleasently surprised at how good this movie was. Granted, it's still not an awesome movie, but I still laughed, and fangirled Zac. Plus, I felt like the character of Ned is potentially how I will end up in my life (if I pursued a major in computer things instead of journalism). I would totally be that nerdy.
- Star Trek
- GQMF. Jesus christ, I love this movie. They did a fantastic job of casting this movie. Everything from Chris Fine Pine Fine as Captain Kirk to the Choverlord (John Cho) as Sulu. From the hotass Karl Urban as Booooooooooooones to Simon Pegg (<3) as Scotty. Everybody had some quality of the original character put into their performance, and it was a lot of fun to watch, even as someone who knew little to nothing about Trek. Also, lens flares are awesome. (As is JJ Abrams. End of story.)
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
- Another one of those movies where, yes I know it's shitty, but I still like it anyways. (I haven't seen a lot of movies which came out in 2009 too. The Hangover is pretty much calling my name, though.) Anyways, this movie just screams "HAI, I'M A MICHAEL BAY MOOOVIE. I CAN HAS LOTS OF BOOMS AND ESPLOSIONS." But I love gigantic explosions and booms. There's a shit sotry, but there's OPTIMUS PRIME who I've loved since I had his action figure when I was a kid. (I was a total tomboy when I was a little girl. I had Barbies AND Power Ranger action figures.)
- Up
- I'LL TAKE "MOVIE WHICH MADE PEOPLE CRY IN THE FIRST 10 MINUTES" FOR $400, ALEX. No seriously guys, I almost cried too. It was heart wrenching to watch that opening sequence. I love the crabby old man because I have a feeling that Bailey and I will end up like that one day. ("GET OFF MY LAWN OMFG." You know it's going to happen, Bails.) And I was Dug as a pet. Most anoying, yet adorable, animal in the history of everything ever.
- Watchmen
- After I was done watching this movie (on the plane ride from Seattle to Frankfurt. 12 hrs of my life spent on a plane without sleep omg.) I wasn't very impressed. But after kinda mentally analyzing it (during those 12 hrs. still omg.) I though about how freakishly gorgeous this movie really is. I also was thinking about the plot and characters and subtle character developments that occur. Movies become much more awesome (imo) if you have subtle details which make the audience think about what's going on. (But there's a line you shouldn't cross where it becomes too much thought, and I'm too lazy to think that much.) There's a hell of a lot of social commentary, which I also love. Uh, and explosions. And people in tight outfits. And Jeffrey Dean Morgan (DYING AGAIN. HONESTLY, JDM, CAN YOU JUST NOT KEEP DYING?!)
