A composite poker chip is created by blending clay with plastic. The sound and feel of real poker chips used in casinos is due to the clay content. An almost clay feel is created by blending a plastic with the clay. Another option that is even cheaper is to purchase ABS chips. These are slicker so they don’t stick together as well when stacking, but they will take much more abuse and be less expensive than composite clay. They are the favorites for most charity tournaments because of the realistic size, weight, and colorful casino markings, and their low price. These poker chips will also last longer and take more abuse than either composite or clay poker chips.

You can add a nice touch to the game by offering some poker themed prizes to the players that maybe didn’t do so well, or maybe even for the main winners. Movies have often portrayed glamorous poker games on the old steamships, the clay poker chips clinking on the table as players faced each other down, the sound of river water rippling in the background. But in fact, the casino poker chips as we know them today, really only developed late in the 19th century. So the early steamboat games, at least, were played with very different types of items, like gold nuggets or random coins, and there was no consistency at all. So eventually the manufacturers added ceramic materials to the clay, to make the mixture stronger and more durable. The development of clay poker chips didn’t stop once their basic formula had been established. Since they’d been introduced in the first place to reduce inconsistency and possible cheating, casinos went a step further and individualized these chips to correspond to whatever casino they came from. Proprietary clay formulas were created and patented by casinos, and they added special indicators on the chips themselves, so that any particular type could only be used and cashed at the establishment for which it was created.
However, the development of chips hasn’t stopped with the clay poker chips; they now have several competitors, and as always, fraud and security are the primary reasons. For example, many casinos have begun to use chips with a metal core overlain by a tough resin material. These are lighter than the original chips, but there are other differences as well, such as the fact that the newer chips might also carry markings that are only visible in ultraviolet light.
