My 2009
I spent the first minutes of 2009 encased in a plexiglass dome somewhere in the wilds of Northern Ontario. There was champagne and small children with Happy New Year hats. Also my girlfriend was there. We were taking the train first class from Toronto to Vancouver and it was our second night onboard.

The year before I'd rung in the new year from an Amtrak coach seat in Spokane, cold and alone, listening to some drunk guy singing Auld Lang Syne loud and off-key. So 2009 was an improvement already.

Anyway we took the train across the country. Winnipeg, Edmonton, Jasper. Then snowy Vancouver and a boutique hotel downtown. A couple days in Victoria and then I flew to Mississippi. Plane delayed, bags lost. Flew to Melbourne. Plane on time, bags lost regardless. Worked and caught an Andy Roddick tennis match.

Flew home, then flew to Tunica, Mississippi. Worked. Flew home. Cashed in my Alaska Airmiles and flew to Mexico with my girlfriend. Spent three days trying to keep up with her in Mexico City and then a couple days on the beach in Acapulco. Flew home on the last day of my 26th year. Spent the first day of my 27th year enroute to Los Angeles.

Spent a couple weeks in Commerce, California, for the third and final time (thank god). Then flew home. Then flew to Germany for a disastrous EPT experience plagued by jet lag, equipment failure and general bitchiness. Then flew home and sought solace in a $700 watch.

Spent early April creating a miniature shitstorm in Foxwoods, Connecticut. Nearly lost my WPT press credentials. Pissed off a bunch of suits. Got out of the woods alive. And now I'll never go back to Foxwoods again and you shouldn't either. Spent Easter with my family and my girlfriend. Then flew home.

Flew business-class to Italy courtesy the good people at Lufthansa. Spent a couple weeks on the Mediterranean Coast with Mad, Benjo and Wee Man. Braved drunk, coked-up sluts and the mentally-depraved (and Nelly) in San Remo and Monaco before flying home again.

May: called an end to the Porsche experiment. Traded the car for a Dodge truck. Dumped the truck for an SUV. Dumped the SUV for a Jeep Wrangler. A torturous, unpleasant experience for all. Also bought a Blackberry. Also got laid off.

Spent the summer working on contract at the PokerListings ranch in Las Vegas. Best of my four summers at the World Series. Played a lot of basketball, swam and ate barbecue. Then my girlfriend came and we did Vegas in style, visiting the Grand Canyon and catching a Cirque du Soleil show before hitting the party circuit and taking in an incredible private Nelly concert at the Palms.

In mid-July my contract expired and I found myself unemployed, having chosen to dump my amazing, high-paying, world-traveling job in favor of, well, nothing. No freelancing, no future. No chance of any job that paid half as well or provided anything close to the kinds of experiences I'd enjoyed over the last three years. But I don't want to write about poker for the rest of my life and so I quit to write genre novels on spec from the comforts of my mother's basement. Time will tell, but the job was gone anyway.

Went to Windsor to watch two close friends get married. Spent a week on the beach in PEI. Bid goodbye to Vancouver's beaches, mountains, restaurants, ice cream parlors, parks, strip clubs, bars and supplies of Jagermeister (to say nothing of my cadre of good friends). Then packed up the Jeep and with my girlfriend riding shotgun, drove across the country.

Overnight in Revelstoke and Banff. A couple nights with Phill and Amy in Edmonton. Then stops in Regina, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay before we traced the north shores of Lake Superior to Wawa and Lake Huron to Manitoulin Island. We took the ferry to Tobermory and drove across Southwestern Ontario to St. Catharines and my new home.

Two nights in St. Catharines and then a twelve-hour drive to Cape Cod. A glorious week on the beaches in Cape Cod and then a twelve-hour drive home. A week or so in Ontario and then my brother and I drove him to Winnipeg to get him settled into law school. Spent a week in Winnipeg dodging mosquitoes and then drove back to Southern Ontario on my own.

Then I bore down and got to work. I've managed to write three first drafts and edit something into a reasonable second/third draft in the three months I've been here. I've turned down an invitation to an MFA program and am talking to an agent who is interested in my work. If writing is long stretches of insecurity bolstered by a few moments of glorious encouragement I've had a pretty decent fall.

I've also made a trio of trips to Windsor and a pair of weekend trips to Kingston and a wonderful week at the Dojo dojo in London. I spent almost every other weekend with my girlfriend in Toronto. We went sight-seeing and saw movies and ate good food and walked her dog and I helped her learn to drive and after a year as a long-distance couple it was worth the move from Vancouver just to see her on a regular basis. Plus I feel pretty happy with my level of production and with any luck this whole decision won't be the dumbest thing I've ever done.

Anyway, I spent Christmas with my family and grandmother in St. Catharines and I'll spend New Years in Windsor. My girlfriend's in Peru but I'll be joining her there pretty quick. So it's been something of a crazy year, but all things considered I think I'm happier now than I was 361 days ago. And that's all that matters, right?
