Thanksgiving was this weekend, as many of you know. Mine was good, but it was our first Thanksgiving that we did not spend as a family. I had my official (and delicious dinner) at Mom’s house, which I still consider home, with her and Collin. Then after playing a couple games of Clue, Collin and I went to my Grandma’s house and spent a bit of time there. Collin wanted to see our extended family, whereas I was all for stalling so we only saw Dad and Grandma, but we ended up seeing them, plus uncles Gary and Larry, aunt Ann, and cousin Sarah. It was actually fine though, and kind of funny, as it always is with them. We spent the night at Dad’s house afterward, which played out like it normally does. Some poker. Texas Hold ‘Em. Dad cleaned us out. I have to re-learn Poker every time I play since I hardly ever play. Then we watched The Power of One, which was pretty good, though not as good as the book, which is pretty stellar.
On the 24th, Collin and I went to see Brand New. This was Collin’s first real rock concert, and in a sense mine too, since I’d always gone to colleges before. Collin was basically not comfortable with being among the crowd, and I told myself that we would only go as close as he was okay with, so we ended up standing at the very back edge of the crowd, slightly to the left (crowd left, stage right). We had a clear view of everything, and there was no getting jostled about (I was actually able to write down the setlist during the show, to give you an idea). It was a different experience for me, to be sure, but he seemed to enjoy it, so it was worth the distance viewing in that respect. It was still an enjoyable show of course. They played wonderfully, and the setlist was very impressive:
Welcome to Bangkok
Sink
Degausser
You Won’t Know
Okay I Believe You, but My Tommy Gun Don’t
Sic Transit Gloria…Glory Fades
The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows
Limousine (MS Rebridge)
Vices
Gasoline
Sowing Season
You Stole
Luca
The Archers’ Bows Have Broken
Jesus
Bought a Bride
At the Bottom
Play Crack the Sky
I was ecstatic that they played “Limousine” since they had neglected to the first two times I saw them, and it’s one of my favorites from the third album. It was also cool to see “Quiet Things,” which I didn’t expect. They picked a great set of 6 songs off the new album to play. So good in fact that I didn’t even notice them not playing “Bed” until after the show. That’s probably my favorite. They actually played more songs from Devil and God than Daisy. I think that’s how they do things when an album first comes out. I remember hearing something similar about after Devil and God came out, so I imagine sometime next year they shows will be much more Daisy-heavy, and maybe they’ll be playing “Bed” and “Daisy” more regularly, which I would love to see. I was particularly impressed with “Gasoline” live. It was spot on and a lot of fun to watch. During the show they had these really odd, almost short films (b&w) playing of various things. During “Sowing Season” there was a diagram of an ear and then a brain overlaid with a face that changed from neutral to yelling-looking, during “You Stole” there was some old-timey footage of carriages and things like that, “Bought a Bride” had some buildings exploding among other things and “At the Bottom” had various wildlife including the fox from the Daisy cover. There were times when I found myself watching them more than the band since the screen was so big and clear, but they were suitably weird and abstract, the kind of thing you’d expect to see still-frames of in the liner notes for one of their albums. Also the kind of thing “avant-garde” short-film directors try to pass off as decent films without having Brand New playing awesome songs during them. But anyway, great show, a little too distant for my tastes, but Collin enjoyed himself, which was the goal of the trip to begin with.
A note: it turned out that Crime in Stereo opened the show, then Glassjaw played, and then Brand New. Crime in Stereo was a suitable opener, nothing mind-blowing, and I couldn’t understand a word, but no worse than say Colour Revolt from the last show. Glassjaw on the other hand, was an absolute chore to watch. It’s possible they had a couple good songs, but I couldn’t tell through the layers of douche. I literally thought that they played for more than an hour, but Collin told me later it was no more than 45 minutes. Instead of facing the crowd when they play, the stand in a circle and play facing each other. The singer/screamer would walk around at times and face the crowd, but that was it. I ended up watching the mosh-pit of extreme douches more than I watched him, and also the girl next to me, who was pretty cute and had a lip ring. I was pleased to see that she checked her cell phone as often as I checked my watch during Glassjaw. Anyway, Glassjaw sucks, and they also scream too much. I like to see new openers at shows, but I would have rather watched Manchester Orchestra open for BN by a mile.
Back to family. I think I mentioned to Liz and maybe Rebecca about my parents’ recent squabble, and current not-talking-to-each-other. That’s still the case, and my current mission is to try and get my mom to invite Dad over for Christmas because I can’t stand the idea of separate Christmases. I’ve always loved Christmas and I can’t see it any other way. Maybe this is me being a bit juvenile, but I’d rather my parents work things out than not, at least. Basically, she won’t invite him, or even speak to him again supposedly, unless he apologizes for (a) accusing her of not getting a divorce in order to save money, which was actually his reason for not wanting a divorce, and (b) accusing her of using him as an “escort service.” This is probably the kind of personal information adults warned us not to put on the internet in the 90s, but who reads this thing? Anyway, I really want to have the balls to bring this stuff up with my Dad because despite the fact that I feel bad for him being so alone and for not being as close with me and Collin as Mom and everything, he still brings it all on himself and has never treated Mom fairly. I guess the worst that could happen is we open up some wounds, get everything on the table, and still have separate Christmases. I’m all for honesty and openness, I just hope it results in some kind of at least temporary reconciliation. It would be depressing as hell to have a separate Christmas with Dad.
Went to see The Blind Side and The Fantastic Mr. Fox while I was at home. TBS is basically what you’d expect from the trailer. Entertaining, mildly funny, inspirational, etc. TFMF was quite good, especially funny, inspired animation, and good pacing. One of Wes Anderson’s more normal movies, actually, which was impressive to me.
Watched two absolutely excellent episodes of The New Batman Adventures with Collin. Both of them sort of ended story threads from the original animated series. The first picked up after the Mr. Freeze full-length movie, and explained that he never did go to be with his wife after she was cured because his disease had claimed most of his body and he was able to live only with tons of mechanical aid a la Darth Vader. You could make an excellent little serial out of the Mr. Freeze episodes and the movie that tell one hell of a story arc. The other episode was what appeared to be the end of the Ventriloquist/Scarface story, and dealt heavily with multiple personality disorder, and was suitably dark and sinister. These newer episodes stay right along with the quality and storytelling of the original, with the only difference being the bigger focus on Batman’s new superhero allies and the slightly altered animation style. I can’t wait to watch more, but it’s hard to get Collin in the mood.
