Michael Matusow nació el 30 de abril de 1968 en Los Ángeles, California. Es onocido como The Mouth por el lenguaje extremadamente vulgar y maleducado que usa mientras juega. Empezó siendo croupier, lo que le ayudó a comprender el juego antes de empezar a jugarlo seriamente. Después empezó una exitosa carrera como jugador profesional.
Sin embargo, más allá del póquer, la vida de Matusow ha estado plagada de problemas de distinto género, como las drogas (lo que le valió incluso un periodo en la cárcel por posesión de cocaína) o el sobrepeso (llegó a apostar un número de seis cifras a que era capaz de bajar hasta un cierto peso y esa vez consiguió ganar la apuesta).
La carrera profesional como jugador de Matusow es de un éxito indudable.
Su primera victoria en las World Series of Poker (WSOP) no fue una victoria propiamente dicha. En 1998 pagó un tercio de la entrada para un satélite al main event a Scooty Nguyen, quien ganó ese año el brazalete y el título de campeón del mundo, devolviendo 333.333$ a Matusow por el favor.
En 1999 ganó su primer brazalete en el 3.500$ No Limit Holdem event, embolsándose 265.475$.
En 2001 quedó sexto en el main event, perdiendo la que reconoce fue la mano decisiva ante Juan Carlos Mortensen, al tirar su mano ante un bluff de este jugador que ganaría ese año el torneo. Este ha sido su mejor registro en el main event.
En 2002 consiguió su segundo brazalete en el 5.000$ Omaha Hi/Low Split 8 or Better, para un premio de 148.520$.
En 2004 consiguió llegar a su primera mesa final del World Poker Tour (WPT) en el Aruba Classic. En este circuito ha conseguido un total de 4 mesas finales.
En 2005 de nuevo hizo un excelente resultado en el main event de las WSOP al quedar 9º de 5619 jugadores y ganar 1.000.000$.
En 2008 ha conseguido su último brazalete WSOP hasta la fecha en el 5.000$ No Limit 2-7 Draw con recompras para un premio de 537.862$.
En total ha conseguido entrar en cash 25 veces en este circuito. Se estima que las ganancias en torneos en vivo de Matusow son de 6.800.000$. Actualmente forma parte del equipo de FullTilt Poker, colabora también con Card Player haciendo vídeos de estrategia.
